Laser Skin ResurfacingLaser skin resurfacing, also referred to as a laser peel, is a cosmetic procedure which uses a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser to resurface the skin for a smoother, more youthful appearance. Laser resurfacing removes the outer, damaged layer of skin. It may be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, scars, and hyperpigmentation. Dr. Miller and Dr. Steinbrech perform laser skin resurfacing treatments on an outpatient basis at their JCAHO accredited office-based facility at Gotham Plastic Surgery of New York City. Local anesthesia may be used and treatment times may range from a few minutes to an hour depending on the size of the treatment area. During the procedure, a carbon dioxide laser beam of precisely focused light is applied to the skin. This light vaporizes the outer, damaged layer of skin, revealing the new skin beneath. Some swelling or minor discomfort may result following laser skin resurfacing. The skin may appear pink for several weeks. Sun protection is very important after treatment. Work and normal activities can often be resumed after one to two weeks. |
